Background of the study
Urbanization has profoundly influenced family structures, leading to evolving dynamics that reflect modern socio-economic pressures and cultural shifts. In Delta State, urban families are experiencing changes in household composition, parenting roles, and intergenerational relationships. Factors such as increased migration, higher education levels, and the demand for dual-income households have contributed to a transformation in traditional family models (Eze, 2023). The contemporary urban family is often characterized by nuclear, single-parent, or blended configurations, which challenge long-held cultural norms and expectations. These changes impact socialization processes, support systems, and even community cohesion, as traditional extended family networks gradually recede. While modern family structures offer greater individual autonomy and economic opportunities, they may also lead to reduced social support and increased stress among family members. Existing literature suggests that urbanization, coupled with economic pressures, necessitates adaptive strategies within family units to maintain stability and nurture emotional well-being (Akinyemi, 2024). This study examines the shifting dynamics of family structures in urban settings in Delta State, focusing on the underlying causes, resultant challenges, and potential strategies for fostering resilient family units in modern urban environments.
Statement of the problem
The rapid urbanization in Delta State has led to significant alterations in traditional family structures, resulting in challenges such as weakened intergenerational bonds, increased rates of divorce, and economic pressures on single-parent households. These changes have implications for social support systems and the overall well-being of urban families. Despite growing academic interest, there is limited empirical research on how these changing dynamics affect the functionality and stability of family units in urban areas. Understanding these shifts is critical to developing social policies that address the needs of modern urban families while preserving essential cultural values (Obi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the changing dynamics of family structures in urban Delta State.
To identify the socio-economic and cultural factors driving these changes.
To recommend strategies to support and strengthen modern family units.
Research questions
What are the predominant changes in family structures in urban Delta State?
Which socio-economic and cultural factors influence these changes?
How can policies be developed to support the stability of modern family units?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolving dynamics of urban family structures. The insights gained will help policymakers, social workers, and community organizations design interventions that bolster family stability and resilience in urban settings, ensuring that societal transformation benefits all generations (Akinyemi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the examination of family structures in urban areas of Delta State and excludes rural family dynamics. Limitations include potential self-reporting biases and the diversity of urban experiences across different communities.
